For a battle as small as Gonzales was there is plenty in and around the town to help remember it. S. 183. The Village features ten historic buildings from different periods of nineteenth-century Texas. During special events held several times a year, reenactors in period costume perform demonstrations of pioneer life. Most notable of these is the "Come and Take It Days" held the first weekend in October. The Battle of Gonzales is reenacted during this festival. In the town of Gonzales itself is the small but impressive Gonzales Memorial Museum.
In making a compilation such as this is, decisions had to be made as to what constitutes a battle and which events should be included or excluded. Along with its proud history, Texas also possesses an extensive record of violent confrontations. The line that separates these confrontations from actual battles is not always well defined. I Page xiv have tried to include descriptions of battle or fights in which two organized forces (whether professional military entities or not) with some specific strategic objectives in mind faced off against one another.
What follows are brief descriptions of some of the more important battles and battlefields of Texas. Also mentioned are some of the lesser battles and their locations. It is not intended as a comprehensive study of any of the battles or sites included nor is it an all-inclusive list. There have been many more battles and fights on Texas soil. Each deserve and many have already been the subject of book-sized studies. My intention is to bring together for the first time some of the battles which have shaped Texas history.
